Bobb Bruno “Black Gel” cassette (DNT064)

$5.00

A warm welcome back to the tuff bunny, Bobb Bruno. “Black Gel” started as a synth improv on Korg Delta, Nord Wave, Casiotone MT400V and DSI Tetra in his bedroom, later properly recorded in same bedroom. Best listened to with the lights off. For “Years” Bobb was fortunate enough to get Sheridan Riley (drums, Avi Buffalo) and Cameron Stallones (guitars, Sun Araw, Magic Lantern) to play on the track. Electronics/psych head nodder. An edition of 100 hand numbered pro-dubbed and imprinted tapes with a scary mutated-bunny-swan design.

Reviews:

“An apt ambassador, Bobb Bruno (The For Carnation, Goliath Bird Eater, Best Coast) returns with ‘Black Gel’, which accompanies the re-issue of his ‘Clown’s Castle’ CS, also on DNT. The short-to-medium pair of sides span Bruno’s synthetic sounds from left pocket to right, where the title track drones and raves in the near-field with both rhythm and ambience, and the b-side “Year2” burns like a Krautrock blue flame with searing guitar by Cameron Stallones and a steady expansion by Sheridan Riley on drums. Certainly an odd pairing, as opposed to more coherent releases like ‘Dreamt On’ – however, the tape more so resembles the scope of Bruno’s solo creations, and in turn only reaffirms the commitment by artists like Bruno and labels like DNT to preserve the space for abstraction, demonstration, and open expression in an ever weirder music economy. 100 copies pro-pressed with hand-numbered cards.” – Animal Psi, https://animalpsi.com/2014/03/bobb-bruno-black-gel-uton-kun-korallit-puhuvat-pilville-and-dj-dj-tanner-home-entertainment-review/

“This is the second Bobb Bruno tape of the lot, and this one has new material, instead of being a reissue. Side A starts with some heavy gritty drones that build up to heady undulations, until some cosmic synth stab and echo in to add even more texture. The first drones fade out a little to make room for some analogue Kosmische noodling and layering. It’s a classic synth exploration, too classic maybe. But it definitely holds up as deep, dark and heavy. The second half of “Black Gel,” with a simple monophonic bass-synth line, gets especially into a good groove. Side B, “Years 2,” continues in the same direction. Quiet moments are interrupted by blasts of noisy grit. Abstract drumming, from Sheridan Riley (from Avi Buffalo) comes in to give some rhythm, but rarely stays on one beat pattern too long, giving a nice improvisational feel. When a guitar comes in with heavy effects, the whole thing starts to feel more like a real song, and it’s all the better for it. I was not surprised to find out that Cameron Stallones, the man behind Sun Araw, is the one jamming on guitar, and his style shines through on this track. I was also not surprised to read that this tape started out as some bedroom experimentation and was only later refined for release. It all has that improv/dicking-around feel to it. Pretty good, but still lacks something to really set it apart.” – Drugs to take music to, https://drugstodomusicto.wordpress.com/2013/12/23/dnt-records-tape-extravaganza-part-2-electric-boogaloo/
