Cult of Riggonia is a Macon/Athens, GA-based psychedelic collective known for their chaotic experimentalism that melds tribalist sounds and vocal harmonies with textured noise from both acoustic and electronic palettes . Their live shows are known for being fully immersive almost theatrical experiences involving costumes, masks, a variety of puppets, and even audience interaction. Their signature aesthetic blends psychedelic rock with eastern influences and stream-of-consciousness musical approaches. The members are fantastic musicians, having played together for well over a decade, their bonds are both visible and like magic on stage, bringing a progressive aspect to their performances and recordings alike that is so in sync you just know its telepathy when the rhythms get going. The waves of layered intricate jams are accompanied by catchy melodies, employing a similar communal ethos as Amon Düül, Gong, The Arkestra, or the P-Funk mothership. Their shows incorporate video projections and stuffed animals complete with whoops and hollers, chanting together in a language of their own construction. The collective has released tons of stream of consciousness material on their bandcamp page as well as their 2013 vinyl LP “Nematode Rodriguez Presents…” on Athens-based Cloud Recordings. The band first started playing shows with Hooker Vision artists in 2012 and have remained friends ever since. It’s a delight to have an opportunity to bring the Riggonians to Hooker Vision’s roster for a long overdue collaboration on this split cassette.
Modern Lamps is the more freeform duo project of Grant and Rachel Evenings, often bringing in a rotating cast of friends and collaborators to expand their otherwise ambient and drone soundscapes into something more musically varied. Following an evening of failing to craft something like a reggae track, they experienced a vision of a stone being pulled apart as if it were made of wool, each fibrous thread resonating like a micro-orchestra. The following day they sought to capture that sound with a bare bones tabletop assortment of acoustic instruments run through an array of electronics and with very little post-production.
On this split tape, Cult of Riggonia shares a previously buried jam from 2016 alongside Modern Lamps.
