Description
“… a great project, expertly realized” – The Wire, Byron Coley
“… the music does feel as if it’s mirroring photosynthesis, essentially transforming light into life.” – Zen Sounds
An exploration of botanical time, Solarium Songs is new music for photosynthesis. The work is formed through creative partnership with living plants, using their electrical responses to shape the direction and texture of each piece through real-time creative exchange.
Hiram acts as both researcher and composer, developing proprietary methods for botanical sound translation that honors the sentience of natural organisms. Solarium Songs emerges from months of creative dialogue with the plant world, composed using bio-electrical data and shaped through analog synthesis and electroacoustic processing. Each piece offers an intimate portrait of interconnection, capturing the quiet pulse of life as sunlight shifts at the edge of awareness.
Building on pioneering work in data-sonification, this project defines a distinct palette that explores deeper understanding through focused use of contemporary technology. Through patient observation, this practice is rooted in sensitivity. The concept of transforming light into life is reflected through gradual, imperfect processes, mirroring our own human paths toward growth. These immersive soundscapes invite listeners into direct communion with the botanical realm, creating space for reflection and renewal.
Developed in preparation for live solo performance at the Wonder Valley Experimental Festival in Twentynine Palms, California, these pieces represent a full season of Hiram’s work, capturing a complete creative cycle from botanical research, to composition, rehearsal, recording, and performance. The work carries a quiet energy of expanded perception, exploring subtle frequencies of organic development.
These sonic landscapes are created to facilitate meditative states and somatic connection. Solarium Songs invites attentive listening in spaces filled with natural light, a practice in acoustic ecology for our modern moment.
