Description
Drawing inspiration from sonic visionaries Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, American minimalism, and ’70s German experimentalists Cluster and Neu, Electric Scribbles on the Grid is a studio collaboration that expands the boundaries of modern guitar music through process and production. With a reverential nod toward Manuel Göttsching’s 1975 psychedelic minimalist opus Inventions for Electric Guitar, each sound on this recording originated on a guitar—whether standard 6-string electric or acoustic, baritone, electric 12-string, or lap-steel—played by guitarist Nick Millevoi. Those sounds were then shaped and reassembled by Zach Goldstein, who sculpted each of the record’s six compositions to challenge the way we hear the guitar. These soundscapes seem to live outside of time and place by implying past artistic movements and chasing new musical horizons.
Recorded at Kawari Sound in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, in a string of sessions over the course of several years, Electric Scribbles on the Grid is the first release by this new collaboration, though Millevoi and Goldstein have worked together closely in the past on Desertion Trio’s critically acclaimed Twilight Time (which made 2019 year-end lists across music media, including Rolling Stone, who called it “warmly nostalgic and potently surreal … a stakes-raising celebration”) and the 2022 debut The Sounds of Grassy Sound (by Grassy Sound) which included collaborations with the Meat Puppets.
