Jason Calhoun “Monarch” cassette (Distant Bloom)

Jason Calhoun is a musician, artist, and human living and working in Philadelphia. In addition to being a member of post-folk outfit Hour, Jason has issued a steady drip of patient, textured ambient releases over the years: first as Paper Armies, then Naps, and now under his own given name.

“Monarch” eschews the clean tones of earlier releases, opting instead to subsume melancholy synth drones under a shifting sea of static and distorted field recordings. Holding beauty and grittiness in constant tension, these compositions find stillness and contemplation in sensory overload.
